The Power of Music
Have you ever felt down, played a sad song by one of your faves, and felt some of that pain ease? For 3 whole minutes, you felt understood, you felt listened to, you felt a little less alone. That is all thanks to the power of music, and how connected we are to this beautiful, expressive art.
I will not be the first, and certainly not the last, to say that music has helped me through my darkest times, and also helped me express my most happier times too. Music is a therapy like no other, because unlike having CBT to understand the mind, or Physiotherapy to understand the body, Music understands the SOUL.
The beauty of today, is that there is such a wide variety of genres, a wide enough variety to fit almost any human emotion/mood. And for that, we have to thank the expressiveness and openness of music as the Art that it is. Without music, many of us will struggle to find a way to express ourselves, or a way to release how we feel. I mean, there’s no better way to numb your depression than screaming ‘when the party’s over’ by Billie Eilish, am I right? That is the true healing power of music. It helps NUMB the way we feel, regardless of whether it be for 3 minutes or 3 hours, it allows us to pause our surroundings and become fully immersed in a blend of lyrics and beats, sung by our favourite artists. For many, this is the only form of escapism, and is one of the most beautiful forms yet.
Music gives us something to relate to; to enjoy; to vibe to; to cry to; to scream at; to vent with; to imagine with; to dream of; to love; to motivate us; to LIVE alongside. Music helps us live, helps us acknowledge what we have, it has such power for us humans. Music is versatile, adaptable and is the one mutual thing that connects us ALL, regardless of who we are, or what we become. Music will remain to be the one true power that has the ability to bring together community, to unite society and keep our mutual love in tact.
I am grateful to live amongst the artists we have in this day and age; Camila, Ariana, Summer Walker, H.E.R, Jhené Aiko, Lauren Jauregui, Kehlani, Halsey and so many more. Of course, me being me, my playlists are very camp, but they're filled with the most talented humans, so, no complaining here!
For me, for you, and for everyone, the Power of Music is unlike any other. In times like these especially, let us use this to uplift our spirits because better days are coming.
If you're feeling down, just open Spotify (or Apple Music) and allow yourself to immerse into those sad, deep songs. We all know it helps, whether we admit it or not. Music just has this ability to absorb our emotion, and replace it with comfort and understanding. That is the most beautiful, therapeutic and powerful thing about it.
“Alexa, play ‘This Love’ by Camila Cabello”.
